The magnificent Boltzmann-Gibbs (BG) statistical mechanics
is grounded on the celebrated additive entropic functional
S_BG. This theory satisfactorily describes a plethora of socalled
simple systems. It fails, however, for wide classes of
natural, technological and social complex systems. The
violation of the additive property of the standard Boltzmann-
Gibbs-von Neumann-Shannon entropic functional yields a
sensibly more powerful theory which satisfactorily describes
many systems where the BG theory fails. We will introduce
the basic concepts of this generalized theory, and illustrate it
through some selected systems, including granular matter.
